The Austral Islands constitute an archipelago with a total area of about 152 km2 located in the southernmost part of French Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean. Stretching over a length of 1,317 km, the archipelago is distant from Papeete (Société Islands) 573 km to the nearest island (Rurutu) and 1,301 km to the farthest island (Marotiri). The most western islands are south of Tahiti, the most eastern in the south-southeast. The archipelago is sometimes named Tubuai Islands after its largest island.
