French Polynesia is an overseas community of the French Republic consisting of 5 archipelagos comprising 118 islands including 76 inhabited: the archipelago of the Society with the Wind Islands and the Leeward Islands, the Tuamotu archipelago, the Gambier Islands, the Austral Islands and the Marquesas Islands. It is located in the southern Pacific Ocean, about 6,000 kilometres east of Australia. It also includes the vast adjacent sea spaces. French Polynesia is a non-autonomous territory under Article 73 of the Charter of the United Nations. Dance, music, tattoo, pearl, braiding, street art… from Marquesas to Australes, from Tuamotou to Gambier to the islands of the Society, Polynesia excels in traditional and even contemporary arts. If it is not possible to perceive all its facets during a single journey, some public sites and a gift of sharp observation make it possible to measure its constancy or vigour, in a submissive territory, despite its isolation, to the influences of the world.
